NHS - Dr Foster Hospital Guide: good to hear that the Hospital Mortality Ratio* is less than expected at the North West London Hospitals NHS Trust which manages Northwick Park and St Mark’s hospitals in Harrow and Central Middlesex Hospital in Park Royal. Well done! (*For those diagnoses that account for the majority (80%) of deaths in hospital, the Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio (HSMR) measures the number of patients dying at a trust compared with a national benchmark).

However, it would be helpful to hear how the trust is going to address the reported performance in the areas like the waiting times for hip replacement (120 days against 99 the national average and 46 days Ealing Hospital NHS Trust average) or the knee replacement (122 days against the national average of 101 days) or gallbladder surgery (102 days against 85 the national average).

The Dr Foster Hospital Guide has also marked a number of statements with a x. These include:

Diagnostics: At which of the trust sites is a MRI scanner available 24 hours a day, including at weekends, with radiographers and radiologists available: x

Trauma & Orthopaedics: Does the trust have nurse specialists in trauma and orthopaedics: x

Does the trust have a dedicated trauma list available 24 hours a day for the duration of the week, (Sunday to Sunday): x

Cardiac Services: Does the trust perform primary Angioplasty: x

NPSA/2009/RRR02 - Female urinary catheters causing trauma to adult males: 7 out of 10 statements are marked x

NPSA/2009/RRR012 - Reducing risk of harm from oral bowel cleansing solutions (Action date: 07 September 2009):  8 out of 10 statements are marked x

NPSA/2008/RRR011 - Reducing risk of overdose with midazolam injection in adults (Action date: 09 June 2009): half of the statements are marked x

NPSA/2009/RRR001 - Mitigating surgical risk in patients undergoing hip arthroplasty for fractures of the proximal femur (Action date: 14 September 2009): 7 out of 10 statements are marked x

Notes:
Dr Foster is an independent organisation. By comparing the performance of NHS trusts, the hospital guide gives the knowledge needed to put you in good hands.
It's important to know that NHS patients in England now have the right to choose where and when they receive hospital treatment.
