Trump got the message

Trump has now cancelled his announced visit to Britain - for the second time.

Many big demonstrations were planned to disgrace his visit. Had the prospect of enormous demonstrations not loomed large, Trump would not have again cancelled the visit to one of his regime's closest allies. This is a victory for mass mobilisation, through which even the president of the US can be successfully confronted.

Trump's addiction to war and his bigotry have galvanised the opposition of millions of people. The forces opposing Trump's politics, in which Stop the War has been taking an important role, will continue to build the widest possible coordination against a future visit in the confidence that we can win again.

This development opens up the argument about our foreign policy. It is now clearly no longer a question of Britain's population seeing the "special relationship" with the US as an inevitable arrangement.

After the President made the announcement, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “It appears that President Trump got the message from the many Londoners who love and admire America and Americans but find his policies and actions the polar opposite of our city’s values of inclusion, diversity and tolerance."

He continued that Mr Trump's planned visit next month would “without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests".

"This just reinforces what a mistake it was for Theresa May to rush and extend an invitation of a state visit in the first place,” he said. 18/1/2018
